Building 9 (originally Transit Shed 1) was the first structure built at the Tel Aviv Port upon its establishment in 1937. Located on the eastern side of the dock, it served as a storage area for goods entering and leaving the country. The historical, political, and social developments that led to the construction of the port are closely intertwined with the growth and evolution of the city and the emerging state. Over the years, the building has undergone extensive renovations, altering its appearance while maintaining its original volume.
The current restoration sought to recapture the building’s initial spirit while adapting it to its present commercial use. The entrance doors were broadened as a nod to the original design, and the glass partitions were adjusted to reflect the dimensions of the historical tin panels that once covered the building. The industrial-style shutters and upper windows, as well as the iconic platform lighting, have been reinstated. Renovation efforts also included structural restoration, replacement of the building’s envelope, and the addition of exterior lighting.
